Derrick Brown

Senior Advisor

Derrick is a former school division executive and secondary principal with nearly two decades in Virginia public education.

He most recently served as Chief Academic and Student Services Officer for Lynchburg City Schools, with division-wide responsibility for instruction and student services. He came to that role as the division's Director of Student Services, overseeing student behavior, school counseling, social work, school health, and adult learning programs. During this time, he also built the division's restorative suspension program and alternative academies. He now serves as Executive Director of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia.

Earlier in his career, Derrick was a high school principal — the same school from which he graduated — and the principal of a middle school that, during his tenure, earned full accreditation for the first time in eight years. He began his career teaching high school biology. He is also the founder and board chair of IRON Lives, a Central Virginia youth development nonprofit.
